ATLANTA (AP) _ Brian Buchanan scored 28 points and IUPUI won its
first meeting with an Atlantic Coast Conference school, beating the
Georgia Tech 98-92 Saturday.
Josh Mullins scored 24 and Dannorris Harvey added 19 for the
Jaguars (6-5), playing their first season in Division I.
Georgia Tech (6-7) lost to the obscure Indianapolis school just
13 days after upsetting No. 18 Syracuse.
Buchanan hit 5-of-8 3-pointers in the first half and finished
with a career high in points. The Jaguars, one of the top 3-point
shooting teams in the country, hit 12-of-23 outside the arc.
The game was delayed 29 minutes by a power outage midway through
the first half.
The game featured nine lead changes, all in the opening period.
IUPUI began to take control when Buchanan's 3-pointer made it 51-43
early in the second half. The Jaguars pushed the margin to 10 on
Mullins' trey with 6:41 left.
Georgia Tech got as close as 85-82 when Marvin Lewis scored from
the baseline with 1:23 left, but the Jaguars hit 5-of-6 free throws
in the final minute to put the game away.
Freshman Ed Nelson scored 20 points for Georgia Tech, and
Halston Lane added 17. The Yellow Jackets' leading scorer, Tony
Akins, was held to 6 points. |
