NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Maryland solved the matchup zone its second time around.

Juan Dixon scored 25 points as the third-ranked Terrapins bounced back from a disappointing season opener with an 82-74 victory over No. 17 Temple in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

After Arizona used its matchup zone to stifle Maryland in a 71-67 upset Thursday, the Terrapins made the necessary adjustments against Temple's famed defense. They shot 62.5 percent in the first half and made 12-of-19 3-pointers for the game.

"We were able to come back from last night," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "We were ranked No. 2 in the preseason, you lose and people say, 'What's the problem?' We don't have a problem. We have a very good basketball team." Temple started out strong and took a 30-25 lead on two free throws by Lynn Greer with 6:08 to go in the first half. But starting center Ron Rollerson picked up his third foul just 57 seconds later and the Terrapins took advantage.

Maryland closed the first half with a 14-2 run for a 39-32 edge behind three 3-pointers by Dixon.

"Guys weren't shooting with confidence last night," Dixon said. "They play zone for 40 minutes. You get a lot of open looks from the 3-point line." Temple climbed within 61-58 with 4:20 to go on a follow shot by Kevin Lyde before the Terrapins ran off eight straight points for an 11-point bulge with 2:12 left. Byron Mouton and Steve Blake each had 3-pointers in the run.

Blake scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half as he bounced back from a 2-of-10 shooting performance on Thursday. Blake made 6-of-7 shots, including four from beyond the arc. Mouton added 13 points with a pair of 3-pointers.

"Last night, we didn't run a great offense against the zone," Blake said. "Tonight we made some hard cuts, made some good passes and some good shots." With starting center Lonny Baxter in foul trouble, Maryland turned to a front line that included Tahj Holden and sophomore Chris Wilcox. The duo combined for 12 points and 10 rebounds and also set jarring screens that freed the perimeter shooters.

"Both of these guys are going to play a lot of minutes," Williams said. "I have confidence in Tahj and Chris. It was great to go nine deep with Baxter in foul trouble." Greer fouled out with 27 points for Temple, including three 3-pointers in the final 35 seconds that almost rallied the Owls. Lyde chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds as Temple fell to 0-2 for the second time since 1940.

"These games help us out down the road," Greer said. "The two teams we played (Florida and Maryland) are top-five teams. For us to play and compete as well as we did says a lot." Temple shot a frigid 38 percent (26-of-68) and was outrebounded, 36-34. The Owls did pick up 12 steals, including four by Greer and three each by Alex Wesby and Brian Polk.

Polk scored 11 points off the bench while Rollerson fouled out with nine and eight rebounds.
