ACC TOURNEY MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARDS --------------------------------------- TIDBITS Greatest Individual Performance [warning: opinion below, written in 1996] Randolph Childress '95, hands down. Everyone knows that he set the tourney record for points (107), scored all of Wake's points in OT of the championship game and hit the title-winning shot with 7 seconds left. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. His 7.0 assists per game ranks #1 among the 43 MVP winners, 24% better than the second-place 5.3 recorded by Mark Price and Art Heyman. (Note that his 35.7 ppg and 7.0 apg adds up to about 50ppg he was "responsible for"). [Note: Since this was written Jason Williams has taken first place with 9.0 in 2000] His 23 three point field goals almost single-handedly matched the _combined_ total of 24 posted by all 8 prior MVP's since the trey was fully instated in '87. (Randolph was 23-for-44 .523, while the other 8 combined were 24-for-57 .421, led by Laettner's 9-for-16 .562). His 90% (18-20) free throw percentage was topped by only 4 of the other 42 MVP's - and only 1 of those four had as many attempts (Mark Price 20-for-20). And, of the 17 MVP's for which I have steals data, Randolph's total of 7 trails only Laettner's 14 and Albert King's 8. [end of opinion] Years MVP wasn't on winning team: 1980 - Albert King (MARY) won MVP while Duke won tourney 1971 - Lee Dedmon (UNC) tied for MVP with John Roche of winning USC 1954 - Dickie Hemric (WFU) won MVP while NCSU won tourney Multiple Winners Tommy Burleson, NCSU (73,74) Larry Miller, UNC (67,68) Len Chappell, WFU (61,62) Number Of Tourney MVP's by team UNC - 16 DUKE - 12 NCSU - 9 WFU - 5 GT - 3 MARY - 3 VIRG - 1 USC - 1 CLEM - 0 FSU - 0 Daily Double Seventeen seasons the same player has won both the ACC POY award and the tourney MVP. The daily double winners: Hemric, WFU (54); Rosenbluth, UNC (57); Pucillo, NCSU (59); Chappell, WFU (61,62); Heyman, Duke (63); Mullins, Duke (64); Vacendak, Duke (66 - but he _wasn't_ first team All-ACC!); Miller, UNC (67,68); King, MARY (80- but was only 2nd in All-ACC voting); Ferry, Duke (88); Laettner, Duke (92); Duncan, WFU (96); Antawn Jamison, UNC (98); Elton Brand, Duke (99); Shane Battier, Duke (01) A Moment Of Glory Five players who never made first or second team All-ACC have managed to get their moment of glory by winning the tourney MVP award: Kistler, Duke (60); Worsley, NCSU (65); Dedmon, UNC (71-tie); Kuester, UNC (77); Bradley, UNC (79); A Taste Of Things To Come Another 8 players won the tourney MVP before ever making All-ACC, but 7 of them went on to be first-teamers in future seasons. They are: Ford, UNC (75); Perkins, UNC (81); Bias, Mary (84); Del Negro, NCSU (87); Forrest, GT (93); Stackhouse, UNC (94); Williams, Duke (00). The 8th, Shammond Williams, UNC (97) went on to be second team All-ACC the next season. Then there's J.R. Reid who also won the tourney MVP without being named to either the first or second team All-ACC in '89, but had been first team the _previous_ season. Winning Freshmen Jason Williams (00), Phil Ford (75), Sam Perkins (81) and Jerry Stackhouse (94).
