Hi, I'm Charlie Board and this site is my labor of love. I'm a 40-something software developer and father of three, currently residing in Cary, NC. I try to keep the site non-partisan but I grew up in Winston-Salem an avid Wake Forest fan - an allegiance that survived a stint in grad school at NC State. My earliest ACC memories consist of listening to Wake Forest games on the radio around 1969 or 1970 in my room, pretending I was Charlie Davis and shooting a super ball at the trash can every time Charlie took a shot. My earliest recollection of seeing an ACC game on TV is that of watching the amazing 2ot NCSU upset of South Carolina in the 1970 ACC championship game. My most treasured moment as a fan (and my all-time favorite game - I've nearly worn out the tape) is the 1995 ACC Championship game in which Randolph Childress put on a cape and led us to the promised land. With a little help from a guy named Duncan. MY ACC OPINION LISTS ---------------------- I get a lot of email from readers of this site and one of the questions I get asked a lot is who I think are the greatest players in ACC history. So this time around I'm gonna take a stab at answering that question. These are strictly my opinions - and if you'd like to make your own lists to be published in a new OPINION section of this site in the next update, please do...I'd love to read them! I started to try to list the top 20 players....but quickly came against a problem. In my view, living within the ground rules I set out for myself (below) there are three players head and shoulders above everyone else....and then there are about 20 or so that could come in almost any order depending on how I feel the day I'm making the list. So rather than trying to rank ALL those guys together I've decided to split them out and rank them by position. My ground rules are: --- Only players I've seen are eligible. My apologies to Chappell, Heyman, Rosenbluth and all the other pre-1970 greats, but I can't rank what I haven't seen. --- Rankings are based on college careers ONLY. --- Players who played fewer than three seasons are ineligible...except for their own list at the end. --- Players who used all their eligibility get favored (slightly) over guys who left after three years As always when making out lists such as this, as soon as it's out there I'm going to think of a half dozen players I forgot to include: Ok, on to the lists: THE TOP THREE, IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN ---------------------------------------- 1. David Thompson 2. Tim Duncan 3. Ralph Sampson THE BEST CENTERS ---------------- 1. Tim Duncan 2. Ralph Sampson 3. Mike Gminski 4. Tommy Burleson 5. Christian Laettner 6.
